Empowering Women in Nutraceuticals: A Conversation with Danica Cullins
In the ever-evolving world of health and nutrition, strong leadership plays a vital role in shaping the future of the industry. We had the privilege of speaking with Danica Cullins, EVP of Health & Nutrition at Informa Markets, to gain insights into her journey, the challenges women face in nutraceuticals, and the initiatives that can drive meaningful change.
Leading with Purpose at Informa Markets
“As the EVP Health & Nutrition, I am fortunate to lead a business unit of approximately 150 colleagues responsible for producing 10 events and several content brands. These events and brands include Natural Products Expo West, SupplySide Global, Nutrition Business Journal (NBJ) Summit, and more. I am ultimately responsible for optimizing our organizational design within Informa and accountable for portfolio performance against business KPIs. The role also entails leadership on our long-term strategic planning. I have spent my entire career here – starting at Virgo almost exactly 27 years ago and transitioning into Informa upon our acquisition in 2014.”
Addressing Challenges for Women in Nutraceuticals
“It has been satisfying to see more products designed for women, by women. That said, there is more work to be done here. This can be addressed by assuring that product development teams include women in senior and executive roles – be that science, regulatory, quality, leadership or otherwise. Make sure you have qualified, strong female voices in your senior conversations – your customers will win and so will you.”
The Power of Professional Networks
“For the community, Women in Nutraceuticals (WIN) has provided clear objectives that members can rally around. For the individual, WIN has also provided a welcoming network of women – and men who wish to welcome and elevate women. It’s been easy to find connection, which has produced lasting relationships and exciting progress.”
Key Initiatives to Support Women in the Industry
“Three things come to mind right away. First, I welcome initiatives that develop and elevate qualified women in executive and scientific roles, specifically. Second, I’d like to see more companies fund WIN membership for their employees. And finally, initiatives that further normalize family responsibilities. I’ve seen men increasingly taking family leave and asking for accommodations to balance the needs of work and home. In my opinion, this is an important avenue to accelerating gender equity in the workplace.”
Making an Impact Beyond Work
“I am a proud member of 100+ Women Who Care, an organization with more than 800 chapters around the world. In 2019 I was traveling frequently, feeling disconnected from my local community and lacking in philanthropic service to others. My mother recommended 100+WWC to me, which was so timely. The group meets quarterly to share information about worthy charitable and non-profit organizations, with each meeting resulting in wonderful exposure and thousands of dollars donated to a chosen group. It’s an easy, efficient way to be part of lasting impacts. In 2021, I successfully represented Sage Foundation for Health (which is aligned with Sonoran University of Health Sciences) at a 100+ Women Who Care meeting – and earned approximately $15,000 in donations. It was a thrill!”
Moving Forward Together
Danica’s insights highlight the progress being made in the nutraceutical industry while underscoring the work still needed to achieve true gender equity. By fostering inclusion, supporting professional development, and normalizing work-life balance, the industry can create a more diverse and thriving future for all.
Join the Movement As Danica suggests, supporting initiatives like WIN and encouraging greater representation in leadership roles will lead to success—not just for women, but for the entire industry. Whether through mentorship, advocacy, or simply amplifying female voices, every effort counts toward a more inclusive and equitable future.
